Arcane mechanics of erotic image-making
Elio J Carranza
A thirty-minute bespoke compilation of rare and experimental films from the post-porn genre. Originating in the sex-positive, anti-censorship, and queer-feminist movements of the 1980s and ’90s, post-porn emerged as a conceptual practice that critiqued mainstream pornography and confronted prevailing assumptions about sex and sexuality. Ever since, post-porn has offered a platform for trans* feminist counter-pleasures. It embraces questions of bodily autonomy, ethical production, the mechanics of eroticism, and socialised gender norms, among many others.
During the screening, Elio J Carranza will give a brief introduction and share selected works from their ongoing engagement with the international contemporary queer post-porn scene.
Elio J Carranza is a transdisciplinary artist attentive to the conditions of metamorphic subject formation and the ethical implications of individual and communal states of consciousness. Reading the body–mind as a political entity and investigating the ever-shifting boundaries of psychosomatic transformation are central to their artistic practice. Carranza synthesizes material technologies, world-building as embodied methodology, and image-production software to develop (play) ecologies. These (play) ecologies coalesce as sculptural installations, printed matter, and experimental moving image, aiming to activate imaginative potential that resists structures of domination and remains critical of fixed categorisation. Production processes are guided by a commitment to the poetics of queer, trans* feminist, crip, and more-than-human dissident intimacies.
